End of an Era

The 28th September signals the end of an era for our long-standing Curator, Dave Coles who, along with his wife Rowena retire after working at the Park for 31 years.

To many, in recent years, Dave has been a familiar face either through brief television appearances or via the finger trail board that asks people to help him find his radio. Starting in July 1987 as a keeper, he was promoted to Curator a year later and given the responsibility of taking the animal collection forward. With the help of a dedicated team, the collection expanded and gained recognition throughout the UK, which carries on to this day.

To help the good work continue, Andy Nicholls was appointed as the new Curator of Animals and Mammals on 1st August to work alongside Dave until he retires. On a personal note, Dave would like to thank not only Andy for well over twenty years support and help bringing the collection on, but also the current animal team of Mark, Chelsea, Hollie and Chris – all of whom bring something special to the team, and to part-timer Finn.

Over the years we have had many volunteers and students, too many to mention, but we would like to single out Dave Jones for special mention. Finally, all departments link up with the Education Department to promote the work we do and for this Jane Chapman deserves a special mention.
